“In the Buddhist tradition, taking refuge is a matter of commitment and acceptance and, at the same time, of openness and freedom. By taking the refuge vow, we commit ourselves to freedom.” —Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche

The refuge vow is the ancient, traditional ceremony of becoming a Buddhist. It is a turning point in one’s life, and is both a proclamation and a celebration.

Vow participants are required to come to a pre-meeting from 5-7:30pm on Friday October 4th in order to make a formal request to take Refuge, and to have a short interview to receive a Buddhist name. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please let the Office of Practice and Education know (see email address below).

It is recommended to take the Refuge Vow Class prior to taking the refuge vow. For more information on the class, click here.

If you wish to take the vow, please have your meditation instructor send a written recommendation to the Office of Practice and Education at [email protected].

There is a $30 materials fee for those taking the vow.
