Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Parinirvana of the Vidyadhara, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

This is the darkest hour of the dark ages. Disease, famine and warfare are raging like the fierce north wind.  -from the introduction to the Sadhana of Mahamudra

Class on the Sadhana of Mahamudra

This sadhana (practice) came to be uncovered (terma) by the Vidyadara, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche during his retreat at Tagtsang, near Paro, Bhutan, in September of 1968. It was there, about 900 years ago, that Guru Rinpoche meditated and manifested as the wrathful crazy wisdom aspect of Dorje Trollo.

The Sadhana of Mahamudra was inspired by the prevalence of spiritual materialism, both in the West and in traditional buddhism. It was also provoked by the pervasiveness of confusion of physical and psychological materialism on all levels, and by the Vidyadhara’s inspiration to transmit the wisdom of complete and authentic vajrayana into such a world.

Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, who is the only holder of the Sadhana of Mahamudra Abisheka (empowerment) says about the Sadhana of Mahamudra, “ this sadhana is one of the principal mind treasures (terma) of the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, combining Kagyu and Nyingma, mahamudra and ati. It is the innermost essential guru-yoga practice, mixing peaceful and wrathful….and it is my hope that it will serve to further unify the sangha (community.)

In this class we will discuss the particulars of the practice and the deeper meaning of the principles involved, such as “crazy wisdom” “devotion”  the "guru principle", and the “charnel ground.”

The class will begin on Saturday April 1st and continue on Thursday evenings-April 6,13, and 20.

The cost will include a sourcebook titled "Sadhana of Mahamudra Sourcebook" which contains two complete seminars on the SoM conducted by the Vidyadhara in 1975.

This course will be taught by Barbara Smith, who was a student of the Vidyadhara, Chögyam Trungpa since 1971, and has been a teacher in this tradition since 1974.
